Understanding Medicare: a guide for our clients

We understand that navigating the world of Medicare can be complex. Our aim is to provide you with clear and straightforward information to help you make informed decisions about your Medicare coverage.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as for some younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. Medicare comprises different parts, each covering various aspects of healthcare:

Medicare Part A

(Hospital Insurance) Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare Part B

(Medical Insurance) Covers certain doctor services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Medicare Part D

(Prescription Drug Coverage) Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs, including many recommended shots or vaccines.

Understanding Medicare costs

  • Most individuals don't pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
  • Everyone pays a monthly premium for Part B, with the amount based on income.
  • Costs for Medicare Part D plans, offered through private insurance companies, vary and should be chosen based on your medication needs.

Choosing your Medicare coverage

You have two main options for your Medicare health coverage:

Original Medicare

Includes Part A and Part B. It covers most, but not all, of the costs for approved healthcare services and supplies. You can join a separate Medicare drug plan (Part D) for prescription coverage and purchase a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy for additional coverage.

Medicare Advantage

(Part C): A bundled alternative to Original Medicare offered by private companies approved by Medicare, which includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. These plans may offer additional benefits like vision, hearing, and dental services.
